Crypta Balbi
It can be very difficult to find traces of the Middle Ages in Rome, and for this reason the Crypta Balbi is a true gem. This is the museum in which to experience a true “journey through time” that encompasses even the lesser-known periods of Rome’s history.
We start from a Roman theatre, now in ruins, which housed production workshops and waste-pits, and subsequently the garden of the nuns of the monastery of Santa Caterina dei Funari. At the same time, roads were created on the north side, which are still used today. During the Renaissance, a new church and the adjoining convent were built, and some of these rooms now house the museum. This is a unique example of “ancient urban stratigraphy” and—with the help of an archaeologist—you too will “dig” into the history of this central core of the city.
